Merry Matchboxes

A whimsy but cute little project. After collection too many cans to be able to make the fun cans I described before, I was left with scraps of beautiful paper, I couldn't throw away. So, I decided to keep the scraps to enrich little objects in our home. Daily object like... matchboxes. I like the smell of lighting matches, I like to use them because they are more Eco-friendly than buying gas lighters - we just can't seem to get the hang of refilling these, it never seems to work! Simply put: we go the old-fashioned way.

I do dislike the outside of the boxes in our kitchen. So, combining the two, I glued some simple paper on the cardboard boxes (of course not on the part where you strike the match) and added some frilly edging. There you go, pimped up matchboxes. And they make the everyday use so much nicer! Even my boyfriend likes them and goes aaaaah and oooooh when he lights a match (and no, he isn't burning his fingers, although, I can't be sure...)

DIY Golden Times

Just a tiny little post about today. I wanted to paint. So I took some gold paint and added a little golden edge to these glasses:

Classy Candlelights

I also took the liberty to try the 'gold pointed shoes' I spotted online. Sadly, I rushed the project and the result turned out a little sloppy. So I painted both shoes entirely golden, not knowing how to save my clumsy work. Might not have been my best idea ever, but hey, at any upcoming party, I'd probably be the only one sporting golden shoes! And that is hella stylish... right?

When I overcome my embarrassment, I will upload a picture of the shoes. In the meanwhile, I will go hunting for more glassware to paint, my tiny glasses DID come out the way I wanted :)

Pimp my can!

Lately I am loving the up-cycling business. I love to turn everyday items we'd normally consider to be trash into something brand shiny new. One if the things I immediately loved were these up cycled cans:
After making some curries I had some left over cans to cover, and I found some lovely paper on a bargain at one of my favorite stores for craft supplies: Action.

They've turned out so pretty. I still need to find a way to isolate the cans, as they have a sharp edge where the lids have been cut. Maybe a piece of rubber will help.

For now, I have three old t-shirts my bf discarded, and I will see what to do with that. Plenty lovely tutorials on-line! Keep you posted!

Country Life

Currently, I am reading 'Brave Old World' by Tom Hodgkinson, it's a bit of an almanac for the rustic life, though he shows us readers that 'going back tot the brave old world' can be just as stressful as our contemporary lives. But, he states, the 'old world's shores' are much more rewarding then a lot of our jobs are now. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but he does inspire me, seeing my latest addition to our household:

Cute Country

Add some of natures delicacies...
Forest Founds

And a warm loaf of bread with cheese.

And of course, a glass of red wine in the evening.
Aye mates, the taste of country life in our contemporary world is good.

Very good.

Unexpected Winter Spirits and Spreading The Crochet Fever!

We have had some winter-weather in Holland the last few weeks. A sudden -15 degrees Celsius (before between 5-8) and heaps of snow shocked us into our warm coats and snow boots. Of course it also gave us the opportunity to take long, beautiful wintery walks...

After two and a half hours of walking, a warm pancake is very welcome! Surprised to see mine? I choose the Japanese Vegetarian version, which was quite hearty and very good!

I finished the blue version of the Queen Anne's Scarf... and a yellow one. And started a orange one. Addictive pattern, be careful! I actually finished the yellow one boarding the train back home...

Queen Anne's Scarf

Fun fact: two weeks ago I learned four friends of mine how to crochet. One of the girls actually made a jump start, and is totally hooked: she has passed on her knowledge to her friends, in a mere two weeks! I am SO proud of her. This is what she made so far:

Since one of my best friends is heading to New York for three months, she borrowed me all her crochet books, so lovely of her! I am creating a little good-bye/see you soon gift for her. She is such a lovely woman, we made a long forest stroll together last Friday, and had some blueberry muffins that my sweet bought for us.

Oh, the small pleasures of life!

How was your weekend? Are you already getting some spring vibes? I know I do!

DIY Wooden Crochet Hooks

What an incredible idea, making your own crochet hooks out of wood. The mere sight of them is amazing, a wonderful idea for decoration as well. The website is Spanish but translatable in English. It doesn't provide a pattern or how-to as far as I can tell - if I'm wrong, please let me know - but I'll put the idea on my internal crafting to-do list.

In the reactions on the website someone even mentioned making needles and crochet hooks from old toothbrushes and such. What a clever idea. If I find a real how-to, I'll let you know.

See for yourself, aren't they amazing?

DIY Queen Anne's Scarf Pattern

Wonderful pattern to be found at Mr. Micawbers weblog: The Queen Anne Scalloped Scarf. The beginning is a wee bit frustrating, but after that it's a breeze and even a little addictive, as most crochet patterns are. I'm working mine in a turquoise cotton that I picked up in my first weeks of crochet shopping. Finally found a nice project to use it for.

I didn't like cotton to crochet with in the beginning, but I am starting to take a liking to the soft thread. Also, I'm troubled by spring sensations, even though it has been -15 degrees Celcius here last week and snow is piled up on the streets, I just need some color!

Enough with the grey, the brown, and the white. Here come some spring colors!

Coming up later: I crocheted some fancy hairbands as mentioned in my last post, and I will try and take some photographs. I gifted one to a colleague of mine for her daughter. Happily, they both loved it.

I also found a way to crochet jewellery, by mixing in beads and pearls. How wonderful. It makes for frugal and easy necklaces and earrings. Some pictures coming up later, so stay tuned!

DIY Easy Crocheted Headband

I am still crafting a bit, no worries! I've again made our house two little pillowcovers, I got some cheap fabric coupons at a local drapery store. Wonderful scraps of quality fabric for the taking! I will post those later.

For now, I have a small, cute tutorial for an easy crocheted headband;

You will need:
- an elastic band (used to tie your hair back)
- some cotton or yarn

When you start your crochet chain, 'hook on' the elastic band in your first chain. Then continue till you have a chain that doesn't go completely around your head, just almost. Fasten your chain to the other side of the band. Tie some good knots and fasten off. There you go, your first easy peasy headband!

Now comes the fun part: use your imagination. For kids: add flowers or beads. Use different colors. Use a multitude of strings. Let those creative juices flow!

Craft Update

Happy new year to all of you! It has been a little quiet at astitchintime because I was very busy with doing... erm... nothing. Enjoying the holidays, spending time with dear family and friends, and, like always, enjoying way too many lovely foodies.

So. What HAVE I been up to in the last couple weeks? Well, I did start a new blanket. I am currently a little less inspired for new crochet projects. On the other hand, I bought my first sewing machine - a 70 euro bargain - and am thrilled to be practicing my sewing skill, which tends to be lot harder then simple crochet in my opinion.

So meanwhile, I made...

Gifttags for Christmas (and I made a box to store them in as well)

Crocheted Heart Bunting
A crocheted heart bunting - from scraps of yarn

Stuffy Fluffies
My first set of Stuffy Fluffies, or stuffed animals - a nice way to learn how to sew
Here's a how to;

I already sewed a couple of my dresses who needed a little adjustment and just today I made these pillow covers..

 And had some nailpolish fun...

Next to that, I am working on a secret baby shower gift for a dear friend. Oh and of course, the blanket:

Ok. I know, I said I didn't have time for crafting. But in retrospect, I seem to have crafted quite a bit. Well, the most lovely thing about crafting is that it doesn't really feel like 'spending time' it's more like being in a kind of creative flow... time flies by while I don't seem to notice at all.
How were your holidays? Did you spend time crafting? Maybe you were knitting Christmas ornaments with those Swedish guys - I didn't try because my knitting is not that good - yet!

Have a wonderful weekend!
